Location

Platanillo is located between San Isidro and Dominical at about 15 minutes drive from the beach. The easiest way to get to Platanillo is flying into San Jose, and driving down to San Isidro from there (about 2.5-3 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions). From San Isidro it takes only 30 minutes to drive to Platanillo on a decent blacktop road.

Amenities

Platanillo is a small village by most standards, but there is one reasonable sized supermarket there whcih provides most of the daily groceries. Most foreigners who live there go to San Isidro once a month for shopping and banking. There is an internet cafe in Platanillo, and a couple of small restaurants, most of which serve Costa Rican food. La Choza de Alejo serves pretty good Mexican food, and the restaurant is much nicer then one would think seeing it from outside.There are no banks in Platanillo.

Attractions

Platanillo has a very attractive climate. Because of the altitude (about 1200 feet or 400 meters), it is several degrees cooler than Dominical, just enough to keep it from being hot, but not enough to make it cold. Though the ocean views from Platanillo are in general not as impressive as the views from say the mountains above Dominical or Uvita , the surrounding mountains and valleys more than make up for it. From Platanillo it is only a short drive to both the beach (Dominical) or the city (San Isidro). Though there is a fair amount of foreigners living in Platanillo, it is still much more a typical Costa Rican village than for example Dominical.

Real Estate in Platanillo

Though a sizeable number of foreigners has already discovered Platanillo and its many attractions, property in Platanillo is still significantly cheaper than in the villages closer to the coast. Though good properties to develop and inexpensive house sites with ocean view are becoming scarce elsewhere, Platanillo is still abundant with good deals.
